EU Grant Application Advice and Assistance.

Having written several successful R&D applications to the European Commission and co-ordinated 3 projects, T&D Technology is well placed to advise and assist in EU grants. Assistance is available to source and introduce the best partners to the actual formatting and writing of the application. Framework 6 has now officially started and T&D Technology is actively particpating in the preparation of new applications in a number of thematic priorities.

Case Study

T&D Technology is currently involved as an external consultant in a biosensor project 'SAFEGARD' in Framework 5, which was written in collaboration with Prof. Seamus Higson, now Professor of Bioelectrochemistry at Cranfield University. The project is developing organo phosphorus biosensors using stabilised, engineered acetylcholinesterase's and creating biosensor arrays for environmental monitoring in water.

Staff at T&D Technology were intimately involved in the planning stages of this project and working with Prof. Higson, the partners were first sourced from existing contacts in the UK and Europe. The final consortium includes 5 Universities from the UK, France and Crete, with 1 Irish Research Institute, an Industrial partner from the UK and 2 sub-contractors.

Writing the application to submit to the Quality of Life section of Framework 5 took the most time, with part of this being written by Prof. Higson and part by T&D Technology, using the considerable scientific expertise available. The clear format of the project, the 'in depth' involvement in the priorities of the EU and the level of research and knowledge to fulfil the deliverables of the project, especially the ability to transfer academic knowledge to working laboratory prototypes all contributed to the success of the application in the selection process for funding.

T&D Technology has continued involvement in the project as project consultant, due to the knowledge base available and the technology translation / technology transfer capabilities.

Business Plans for New Start-Up Companies

Working with University technology transfer companies, such as Warwick Ventures Ltd. T&D Technology have been directly commissioned to write a number of initial business plans for new start-up companies to take academic research discoveries toward commercial opportunities. Sarissa Biomedical Ltd. is one example, a company developing ultra-microbiosensors for use in neuro-electrochemistry research and many other application areas. Sarissa Biomedical Ltd. is listed on the spin off company section of the Warwick Ventures web site. www.ventures.warwick.ac.uk/spin.htm and its own web site on www.sarissa-biomedical.com

Similarly, working with another business mentoring company Ithaka Ltd., the specific technology expertise contained within T&D Technology has been drawn upon in the creation of the business plan for the commercialisation of an advanced sensor technology based company.

Ithaka provides a specialist mentoring service to emerging life science companies and helps clients in a number of key areas including; technical/commercial evaluation of business opportunities, business strategy and planning, and sourcing of investment finance from venture capital and business angel sources. Ithaka has a proven track record of success in working with universities, challenge funds, academic spin-outs and entrepreneurial start-ups.
